£1.2million Elder Way public realm improvements move forward

Thursday, August 27th, 2020

Chesterfield’s businesses are benefitting from a wealth of initiatives designed to help them bounce back post pandemic.

Chesterfield Borough Council is leading the town’s long-term recovery with its Economic Recovery Plan. Launched in July, it sets out a number of measures to support and rebuild the area’s economy.

The comprehensive set of fully funded measures include delivering a new business start-up support programme, which will encourage entrepreneurs and workers who may have lost their jobs due to covid-19 to bring forward new business ideas.

As part of the ambitious plan to support and rebuild Chesterfield’s economy, the council is also progressing its ambitious £1 billion growth programme that includes improvements to the public realm on Elder Way.

The £1.2million public realm improvements will forge an important link between the town centre, new multi storey car park on Saltergate and the redeveloped iconic former Co-op department store building into a Premier Inn and retail units and gym,

As part of the public realm improvements, businesses occupying any of the eight fully accessible, modern street level units with glazed frontages and external seating at Elder Way, will benefit from:

  • Pavement widening – to create spill out opportunities for the businesses located in the ground floor units of the Elder Way development
  • Pedestrian crossing improvements
  • The decluttering of the street scene of removing obstacles to pedestrian movement
  • The introduction of trees into the street
  • Introduction / improved design of loading bays
  • Maintained bus movement along Elder Way
  • Taxi rank improvements on Knifesmithgate

The council is not alone in helping Chesterfield thrive again.

A further boost to the town’s visitor and economy was also announced in July when it was revealed that Chesterfield is to become the Peak District’s first gateway town.

PEAK resort in Chesterfield will be home to the UK’s first fully serviced national park gateway. It is intended that construction will start in 2021.

The Gateway at PEAK will be part of the 300-acre PEAK Resort development, which is located just four miles from the town centre. Work on the all-weather, all-year, all-ages David Lloyd Adrenalin World are already underway and it is expected to open in Spring 2021.
