2020 – It’s set to be an exciting year for Chesterfield

Thursday, January 16th, 2020

2020 is set to be a groundbreaking year for Chesterfield town centre, with work beginning on three key developments.

Following the transformation of the former Co-op department store to a Premier Inn hotel and the construction of a brand new 526-space multi-storey in 2019, the final piece of the Northern Gateway scheme will begin later this year with the construction of a new Enterprise Centre.

Located virtually next door to Elder Way, The Northern Gateway Enterprise Centre will be built on part of the Holywell Cross (Donut) car park. It will provide space for up to 32 businesses and their employees. Construction is expected to start in April 2020.

Less than an eight-minute walk from Elder Way, a further office building will also come out of the ground later this year in the Basin Square neighbourhood at Chesterfield Waterside.

The Waterside development is located next to Chesterfield Train Station and is a £340million mixed-use development which, when complete, will boast hundreds of new homes, offices, multi-storey car park and a hotel.

As well as the office building, construction of 173 brand new houses will also begin at the Waterside Quarter neighbourhood of the development. Designed and developed by Avant Homes, the two, three and four bedroom properties were released for sale on 15 January with the show homes at the site expected to open in April.

Connectivity was key for Avant Homes when selecting the site and Chesterfield for development. Stuart Rowlands, Managing Director of Avant Homes Central region said: “We want people to live at Waterside Quarter and be able to leave their car at home. We want them to use the cycle ways and walk into town. The connectivity of the town is a marketeer’s dream for us.”

The location of the three sites – Northern Gateway, Basin Square and Waterside Quarter – put office workers and residents within easy walking or cycling distance of Elder Way where they will be able to choose from an array of food and drink businesses.

Elder Way will have eight modern street level units, with some having access to a stylish outdoor courtyard area, bringing a continental vibe to Chesterfield town centre’s food and drink scene.

The town’s food and drink scene has grown year-on-year following the introduction of the Chesterfield Food and Drink Awards in 2013. Such is the town’s passion for food and drink, Chesterfield now hosts a number of popular events including the Chesterfield Beer Festival at the Winding Wheel in February, the Street Food and Grooves Festival  in the Market Square in June and the Chesterfield Food and Drink Festival in Queen’s Park in August.

If you’d like to be part of the growing food and drink scene and are looking for town centre premises with character for your business, then consider Elder Way. Elder Way will offer a range of quality, contemporary and affordable space.
