Construction begins on Northern Gateway Enterprise Centre

Friday, May 1st, 2020

Construction has begun at the long-awaited Northern Gateway Enterprise Centre, located adjacent to Elder Way.

Comprising 32 office suites, workers based at the new Enterprise Centre will be just metres away from the array of food and drink businesses at Elder Way.

Aimed at helping more local businesses to grow, the Enterprise Centre will complement Chesterfield Borough Council’s highly successful innovation centres at Dunston and Tapton Park.

Contractor Robert Woodhead Ltd has commenced groundworks on the Holywell Cross (Donut) Car Park in preparation for construction. Ahead of construction of the new Enterprise Centre, a purpose-built, secure multi-storey carpark on Saltergate was opened last year.

Groundworks are expected to take around eight weeks ready for full construction later this year. The state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly building will provide high-quality offices in a range of sizes from 26 to 120 square metres, over three floors. It will also offer access to shared facilities and local business support services.

The Enterprise Centre is one of the final elements of the vision for the Northern Gateway scheme. The construction of the 530-space Saltergate multi-storey car park and redevelopment of the the iconic former Co-op department store building to a Premier inn hotel and leisure units by Jomast are key features of the scheme.

Planned public realm improvements to Elder Way will further breathe new life into this area making it a vibrant place for leisure, retail and social gatherings post lockdown.

Contractor Robert Woodhead Ltd has assessed the site prior to the work and has confirmed they will be following strict COVID-19 social distancing guidelines, ensuring that both the employees and public stay safe throughout construction.

Mark Hill, Commercial Property Director at Jomast commented: “It’s very encouraging to see that Chesterfield Borough Council is forging ahead with its plans to further transform Northern Gateway. Although they are very challenging times for everyone right now, Chesterfield retains its positive attitude and remains focused on attracting investment and people to the town centre.”

The iconic Elder Way building has been sympathetically developed into eight fully accessible, modern street level units. With glazed frontages and external seating, available units range in size from 1,420 sq ft to 4,219 sq ft. Each unit can be bespoke and fitted out to your own individual requirements.
