The Premier Inn at Elder Way was pipped to the post by Vicar Lane’s Big Screen for the Future High Street Award at this year’s 2020 Chesterfield High Street Awards.
The hotel was shortlisted alongside Flexible Leasing at Vicar Lane Shopping Centre and Vicar Lane Shopping Centre’s Big Screen.
The Future High Street category was introduced to the awards line-up this year in order to honour the contribution to the high-street by non-retail businesses in Chesterfield.
Previously known as the Chesterfield Retail Awards, and now in their seventh year, the awards celebrate the best shops, market stalls, events, apprentices, projects and businesses in the town.
Since opening in April 2019, the 92-bed Premier Inn, which was formerly the town’s Co-op department store, has become a popular option with overnight visitors to the town.
A stay at The Premier Inn at Elder Way will be further enhanced as the former Co-op building is transformed into Chesterfield’s newest food and drink quarter by Jomast Developments.
The new food and drink businesses within the former retail hotspot will benefit from the £1.2 million Elder Way public realm improvement project. As part of the project the pavement outside the eight fully accessible ground floor units will be widened in order to create spill out opportunities, bringing a Mediterranean-style street café culture to the town.
The popularity of outdoor dining has increased dramatically amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. It was revealed in a Guardian report that the Balmer Lawn Hotel in the New Forest had managed record-breaking revenue every month since reopening in July after refocusing on outdoor dining.
